These are the new changes to Immigration Canada as of September 18, 2024

Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced:

Hard Changes:

Post Graduate Work Permit

  • If you are studying in an area where there is a long-term shortage of employees, you may be eligible for a 3-year work permit.
  • As of November 1, 2024, you will need a CLB 7 for university graduates and CLB 5 for college graduates who want to apply for a PGWP.
  • There will be more changes announced on November 1, 2024

Study Permit

  • There will be 437,000 study permits allowed in 2025 and 2026. This is approximately 10% fewer total study permits that were issued in 2024, and 36% less than were issued in 2023.
  • The 2025-2026 study permit cap will save 12% of the spaces for master’s and doctoral students.
  • Spouses of master’s degree students will only be issued a work permit if the program of study is 16 months or longer.

Spousal Work Permits

  • In the very near future, only the spouses of workers in critical sectors—such as healthcare, construction, and key specialized professions—will remain eligible for open work permits. This includes graduate student’s spouses and closed work permit holders’ spouses. This is expected to reduce the amount of open work permits by 100,000 in the next few years.

Asylum System Intended Changes:

  • Implement partial visa requirements for Mexican Nationals
  • Improve the application processing system
  • Better detect fraud and reduce the number of non-genuine visitors
  • Strengthen the system

As already announced earlier in the year, Canada will reduce the amount of people accepted into Canada from 6.5% to 5% of the total population of Canada.

More changes will be announced on September 26 and then on November 1, 2024.
